Broadband Routers

Routers are ideal for connecting all of your networked PC's to the Internet - giving everyone on-demand shared access to the Internet, for Web-browsing, email, ftp and other Internet activities. In very simple terms, one end of the router connects to your ISDN/Cable/ADSL line, and the other end connects to your network. The exact configuration will depend on your line type and existing equipment.

How the routers connects to your network

As well as Internet connectivity, broadband routers can be used for linking remote office LANs and also for allowing teleworkers to dial into your LAN remotely using VPN technology (or direct dial over VPN).

If you install a router for Internet access, the router automatically connects with the Internet whenever anyone needs access. In the case of a broadband 'Always On' router (e.g. ADSL or cable) then the connection is maintained permanently. You no longer use Windows' 'Dial Up Networking' but instead each PC is set up as if it has a permanent Internet connection. This is all done using a standard 'single user' ISP account - the router uses a system called 'NAT' to connect multiple local users to a single ISP account.

SEG have a wide range of DrayTek Vigor routers depending on what type of line you have (ISDN, Cable, ADSL etc.) and also which facilities you require. Your Broadband connection may present itself as Ethernet or ADSL (RJ11) so ensure that you select a router with the appropriate interface.
